So a lot of the funny animated memes on the Web are GIFs. Most people are familiar with GIFs as the format supports short animated sequences like mini-movies. Now before we proceed, I want to mention a file type that you should not be using in your store and that is GIFs. So for this discussion, we'll assume you won't be loading SVGs into your store and we'll focus only on JPGs and PNGs. That said the support of the SVG format across Shopify, it's themes and apps is inconsistent. Every web browser can read and display SVG images.

Vector files do not use pixels to create the image. The advantage of raster files is they can capture complex details and changes in colors and shadow which a typical photo needs. Photos you take on your phone are an example of raster images. If you've ever zoomed in on an image and noticed that it is comprised of a bunch of small squares, that's because it's a raster image. Raster files have pixels or really small dots that make up the picture. We'll start with a little background on image types.
